With two weeks to go, it is probably safe to conclude that 2020 will be the most unusual and, for many of us, the most difficult year in our lives. For Atlantic Capital, 2020 has challenged us like no other year in the thirteen since our start. Yet, as I talk with many of our bankers, and as I reflect on 2020, I hear and realize that there has been so much good in the midst of the prevailing hardships of a global pandemic, social justice concerns, and a divisive political climate.
We did our part to help the economy recover from the destruction of the economic shutdown. We rose to extraordinary challenges to support your businesses and fuel their prosperity by making over eight hundred PPP loans and providing payment deferrals for almost twenty-four percent of our loan portfolio while continuing to support the day-to-day banking needs of all of our clients. This was our moment on the brightly lit stage of history, and we performed magnificently.
With recent good news about vaccine efficacy and availability, the end of the unabated spread of the virus seems in sight. Our challenge now is to get through the next five or six months before that becomes a reality. We will continue focusing on your financial needs and helping you prevail. We will emerge from the pandemic better and stronger than we were before, and our future has never been brighter.
Working from home has given us more time with our families and slowed the pace of life for many of us. For each of us to personally navigate through the next few months, we need the support of our teammates, families, and communities. In the middle of March, I suggested five ways to cope with the uncertainty and anxiety of the pandemic: 1)Do the next thing; 2) Get exercise; 3)Stay close to family, friends, and teammates; 4)Embrace your inner nerd; and, 5)Pray.
As we approach the end of the year, I would add expressing gratitude to that list. I am thankful that you have continued trusting Atlantic Capital with your business. I am thankful for the extraordinary work we have done for our clients this year. I am thankful for the way we take care of one another. These are the reasons I am so excited about working with you in 2021 and about the future of our company.
